Rick's Magic Hands

A live/stop-motion experiment.

We are always thinking big and then having to work with non-existent budgets. Our goal was to produce practical effects with minimal equipment and cost. We had done some experiments with long exposures for the UCR project and decided to make it move.

In Kevin William's light-proofed garage, Alan Sangma would open the camera's shutter, throw the severed hand, then trigger the flash. Kevin would then step in and draw the engergy lines between Rick Donato's hands. Rick had to hold his positions during set up and then incrementally adjust per shot.

If Rick weren’t such a marshmallow, we coulda gotten another couple hundred frames shot.
